A surfer who battled in order to save the life span of the man caught in a very rip at the Wellington beach has told a coronial inquest from the moment he was forced to rid yourself of the swimmer.
Former Porirua College head boy Albert Alapati, who had asthma and can not swim, drowned within the sea at Titahi Bay after getting caught within a rip while swimming in rough seas with three others.
Surfer Jason Wilson, inside a statement to coroner Garry Evans, said he traveled to the rescue on the 24-year-old with the exceptional girlfriend Lucile Fruean after being told citizens were drowning on January 14.
He was able to achieve the pair and held Mr Alapati while Ms Fruean clung to his surfboard.
Mr Alapati was unconscious, frothing in the mouth with his fantastic lips and face were blue.
After ten minutes being pounded from the heavy sea, a wave ripped Mr Alapati from his grasp and hubby was forced to divert his care about saving Ms Fruean.
"The past time I acquired dragged under was once i couldn't hold the boy anymore. Rrt had been a clear case of lose you to definitely save myself as well as the girl. I simply did whatever needed to do," he explained.
Other surfers found his aid and Ms Fruean was rescued by the surf lifesaving boat while her sister Talimawere and Mr Alapati's brother Sae, who have been also within the rip, were rescued by Mike Pearson.
Mr Alapati's body was discovered washed through to the beach on January 19.
Mr Evans said in the findings that despite it being local knowledge that rips existed on the northern and southern ends in the beach there is no water safety signage.
He recommended Porirua City Council erect indicators as quickly as possible.
